There are still large areas which will benefit from fencing and planting to build and retain dunes and provide sheltered areas for seabirds. This is where the Nursery, manned by volunteers under the supervision of a part-time nurseryman, plays a vital part.
Pingao seed is collected from established dune plants, dried, germinated, grown on, then transplanted to the dunes the following year.
Spinifex is also collected, dried, and germinated in a nursery and, eighteen months later, transplanted in the dunes.
Aerial top dressing, hand fertilizing and pest control are a major factor in the plant's successful introduction and growth.

Each year thousands of Pingao and Spinifex are planted on both the seaward and harbour sides of the Spit. Without volunteer planters this could never be achieved.
